Frequently asked
Why does Retrography need "Always" location permission?
Retrography detects visits to places automatically — home, work, cafés, the gym — so your timeline fills itself in without you having to tap anything. iOS only delivers visit events to the App in the background if you grant "Always" authorization.
iOS will show a blue indicator in the status bar when Retrography uses your location. You can switch back to "While Using" or deny location entirely in Settings → Retrography at any time. Location data never leaves your device.
Where is my data stored?
Everything is stored on your device and synced through your own private iCloud container. There are no user accounts. We don't have a server-side copy of your locations, photos, journal entries, or health data.
If you delete the App and your iCloud data, your data is gone.
How do AI features work? Do my entries get sent anywhere?
AI chat and daily summaries are the only features that send data off your device, and only when you explicitly trigger them. The selected context (you can preview it) is sent to AWS Bedrock, which runs Anthropic's Claude model on AWS infrastructure.
Anthropic (the company) does not receive your data — AWS hosts the model on its own servers and, per Bedrock's terms, does not use your prompts to train models. We don't store the content of AI conversations on our servers.
Each AI action costs 1 credit. You can buy 50 credits for $4.99 as a one-time consumable in-app purchase.
How does the history unlock work?
Free users can browse the most recent 30 days of their timeline. The one-time History Unlock purchase ($4.99) unlocks the full history permanently on your Apple ID. It's a non-consumable purchase restored automatically on new devices via the App Store.
How do I restore purchases on a new device?
Open Settings in the App → Store → Restore Purchases. You'll need to be signed in with the same Apple ID that made the original purchase.
Why does the App ask for HealthKit, Photos, and Microphone access?
- HealthKit — to show workouts, steps, sleep, and stand hours on your timeline.
- Photos — to display photos from your library alongside the places they were taken.
- Microphone — only when you record a voice note. Audio is transcribed on-device using Whisper and never leaves your phone.
You can skip any permission and the App will still work — you just won't see that feature's content.
Can I delete my data?
Yes. Deleting the App removes all on-device data. You can delete iCloud data in Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Storage → Retrography.
If you've used AI features, a per-install device record exists on our authentication proxy so we can enforce rate limits and credit balance. To delete that record, email support with the device ID shown in the App's Settings screen.
How is this different from other journaling apps?
Retrography captures your day passively. Locations, photos, health data, music, and motion are assembled into a timeline without you having to journal manually. You can add a journal entry or voice note on top, but the baseline timeline builds itself.
