Apple Journal deserves credit: it made journaling a system feature and its suggestions — a photo, a workout, a place — are exactly the right instinct. But three years in, the r/appleJournal wishlist hasn't moved: no “On This Day,” no way to see a month at a glance, entries that live in a box you can barely export from.
Retrography is what that instinct looks like taken seriously. The suggestions aren't suggestions — the day assembles itself: places with arrival and leaving times on a mini-map, photos at the hour you took them, the music, the weather, sleep and steps. And the feature people keep asking Apple for is the one we lead with: On This Day, done properly — the whole day a year ago, not just old text.

Where Journal honestly wins: it's free, it's already on your phone, its writing prompts are genuinely thoughtful, and it runs on iPad. If what you want is a nudge to write a few lines now and then, Journal is enough and you should use it.
Where Retrography wins: memory. The automatic timeline, the look-backs, the year as a pattern, search across everything you've recorded — and ownership: a full, readable export that means your years of days are never stuck inside an app, ours included.
The two aren't even mutually exclusive — several of our beta testers came from Journal and still like it. They just wanted the half Apple hasn't built. That half is the whole of Retrography.
